Definition of Noise

THE FREQUENCY OF NOISE

The frequency measured in Hertz corresponds to the number of oscillations per second.

  • The more rapid the variations, the higher the frequencies and the higher the pitch of the noise.
  • If the variations are slow: the frequencies are low and the noise is deeper in pitch in this case.

The human ear is capable of hearing a range of sounds ranging from very low-pitched (20 Hz) to the highest-pitched (20 000 Hz).
The frequencies that our ear cannot hear are:

  • infrasounds (frequencies of less than 20 Hertz)
  • ultrasounds (frequencies of more than 20 000 Hertz).
